J Russell Communities is a leader in building new custom home communities in the Wichita area. The founder, Jay Russell, is an active member of the Wichita Area Builders Association. J Russell Communities has an expansive portfolio of over 65 projects and more master planned communities opening soon. With almost 50 years of experience, Jay has established a considerable presence in the Wichita homebuilding industry. He has attained that presence through a series of vocational progressions, and each one of those progressions was spawned from his aggressive nature, his strong work ethic, and his “hands-on” approach to business.

Jay made the move from firefighter to home builder in 1977. His open, yet functional floorplans provided many homeowners with the kind and quality of product they were searching for. Vision, creativity, and attention to detail in his home designs soon led to Jay becoming a much sought-after home builder. To illustrate that demand, Jay Russell’s custom homes were considered by developers to be a necessity in almost every west-side community of that era… developments such as Amarado, Briarwood, Cedar Park Chateau, Deer Trail, and Reflection Ridge.

What Jay was learning as a home builder in the mid 1980’s led to the next major change in his career. He was hearing and seeing that many home buyers were not fully satisfied with the overall “scope and feel” of the neighborhoods in which they were buying. He sensed they wanted communities to be carved into the natural surroundings, not just cleared and leveled to make space for new homes. And, these buyers weren’t alone in that thinking…that was exactly the kind of home site Jay wanted for himself and his family.

Jay has always acknowledged that the buying public has a broad variance in “wants and needs.” To satisfy those variations, he has developed subdivisions with a diversity of price ranges. He also has long recognized that this variance in “wants” requires a broad spectrum of home builders. Jay has working relationships with the city’s top builders and has also helped new builders establish themselves in the market by offering them the opportunity to build in his developments.
